Inscribing cubes and covering by rhombic dodecahedra via equivariant topology

چکیده
First, we prove a special case of Knaster’s problem, implying that each symmetric convex body in R3 admits an inscribed cube. We deduce it from a theorem in equivariant topology, which says that there is no S4-equivariant map from SO(3) to S2, where S4 acts on SO(3) as the rotation group of the cube and on S 2 as the symmetry group of the regular tetrahedron. We also give some generalizations. Second, we show how the above non-existence theorem yields Makeev’s conjecture in R3 that each set in R3 of diameter 1 can be covered by a rhombic dodecahedron, which has distance 1 between its opposite faces. This reveals an unexpected connection between inscribing cubes into symmetric bodies and covering sets by rhombic dodecahedra. Finally, we point out a possible application of our second theorem to the Borsuk problem in R3.

A marching algorithm for isosurface extraction from face-centered cubic lattices
This work provides a novel method that extracts isosurfaces from face-centered cubic (FCC) lattices. It has been theoretically shown that sampling volumetric data on an FCC lattice tiled with rhombic dodecahedra is more efficient than sampling them on a Cartesian lattice tiled with cubes, in that the FCC lattice can represent the same data set as a Cartesian lattice with the same accuracy, yet ...
متن کاملTuning the shape and catalytic activity of Fe nanocrystals from rhombic dodecahedra and tetragonal bipyramids to cubes by electrochemistry.
Fe nanocrystal catalysts were synthesized by electrochemistry. Shape transformations of Fe nanocrystals from rhombic dodecahedra and tetragonal bipyramids, both bounded by {110} facets, to 18-facet polyhedra enclosed by different combinations of {110} and {100} facets and finally to cubes exclusively covered by {100} facets have been achieved. A study of the surface-structure functionality of t...

The selective oxidation of propylene with O2 to propylene oxide and acrolein is of great interest and importance. We report the crystal-plane-controlled selectivity of uniform capping-ligand-free Cu2 O octahedra, cubes, and rhombic dodecahedra in catalyzing propylene oxidation with O2 : Cu2 O octahedra exposing {111} crystal planes are most selective for acrolein; Cu2 O cubes exposing {100} cry...
متن کاملSynthesis and isolation of {110}-faceted gold bipyramids and rhombic dodecahedra.
Two {110}-faceted gold nanostructures--rhombic dodecahedra and obtuse triangular bipyramids--have been synthesized via a Ag-assisted, seed-mediated growth method. The combination of a Cl(-)-containing surfactant with a low concentration of Ag(+) plays a role in the stabilization of the {110} facets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported synthesis of a {110}-faceted bipyramid ...
متن کاملAthermal jamming of soft frictionless Platonic solids.
A mechanically based structural optimization method is utilized to explore the phenomena of jamming for assemblies of frictionless Platonic solids. Systems of these regular convex polyhedra exhibit mechanically stable phases with density substantially less than optimal for a given shape, revealing that thermal motion is necessary to access high-density phases. We confirm that the large system j...
